Opening Thought

Sunday we were reminded that following Jesus isn't simply about believing differently. Following Jesus changes the way we live. Jesus isn't simply part of our lives. He is our life.

Today’s Scripture

“Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God.”
Colossians 3:1-3 (NLT)

BELIEVE - Christ Is My Life

Every day something is trying to shape us: our culture, our desires, our past, and other people's opinions.

But followers of Jesus, YOU & I, have a different starting point:

Jesus defines who we are and who we're becoming.

That's why Paul tells us to "think about the things of heaven" (Colossians 3:2).

Here's a question to carry with you this week:

Who - or what - has been shaping me most recently?

Because what continually captures our attention will eventually begin shaping our lives.

PRAY - Jesus, Show Me What Needs to Change

Paul gets very direct in verse 5:

"Put to death...whatever belongs to your earthly nature."

Following Jesus doesn't mean we’ll never struggle with sin.

It means we no longer make peace with sin.

We don't change the Bible to fit our lives. We allow God's Word to change our lives.

So take a moment and pray:

“Holy Spirit, show me anything I've allowed to remain in my life that doesn't look like Jesus. Give me the courage to confess it, surrender it, and allow You to change me.”

Then listen. Don't make a list of ten things.

Ask God to show you one. That’s a good place to start for today.

DO - Practice Looking Like Jesus

Paul says our new self is:

"being renewed...in the image of its Creator." - Colossians 3:10

God isn't simply showing you what needs to be removed.

He's showing you who you’re becoming.

So choose one quality of Jesus to intentionally practice this week: patience, compassion, forgiveness, generosity, purity, humility, or love.

Each morning, simply pray:

"Jesus, help my life look more like You today."

Then look for an opportunity to live it.

Closing Encouragement

Who you emulate has greater importance than what you tolerate.

Following Jesus isn't simply about asking, "What should I stop doing?"

There's a better question:

"Who am I becoming?"

Jesus is right there with you….right now. He is not distant. He is near. Focus on Him and His Character. Don’t be distracted by “false gods” that look appealing….they are not. And they certainly are not worth following. Follow The One who is greater, closer, and real.

Remember, Jesus is above all... and He changes all.

Following Jesus together... as each of us strives to be a good neighbor,
